
Located in southern Central Anatolia, Konya is Turkeys largest province with a population of about 2.2 million people. Since its foundation in the time of the Hittites, the region has great importance as a commercial center and grain production. Today is the most religiously conservative region in Turkey.
It is said that this region is one of the first places in the world inhabited by humans. Throughout its history the region was inhabited by many ancient civilizations of the Hittites, Persians, Romans, Seljuks and Ottomans have left traces of their culture are still visible. One of the most remarkable things in this region has been and is its religious function, which for 800 years has been the cradle of whirling dervishes.
